2011 LEOPARD’S LEAP FAMILY COLLECTION SMV RELEASED

2011 LEOPARD’S LEAP FAMILY COLLECTION SMV RELEASED

Known for their versatile and accessible wines, Leopard’s Leap Wines is now releasing the 2011 vintage of their Leopard’s Leap Family Collection Shiraz Mourvèdre Viognier, specially created for the discerning palate.

The Family Collection is only released when a grape variety of a specific vintage shows extraordinary characteristics that attract the cellar master’s attention and gains his special endorsement. This limited collection currently comprises the Rhône-style blend of Shiraz (65%), Mourvèdre (32%) and Viognier (3%).

The nose offers intricate flavours of spicy white pepper, dark berries such as cassis as well as hints of dark chocolate and fruit-cake. This complex infusion of flavours follows through on the palate and opens up into a velvety ripe tannin structure, a soft mouthfeel and lingering finish.

Made in the classic Northern Rhône style, the wine is full-bodied and with its firm tannin structure and bold spiciness, it is a brave and versatile companion to red meat in general, but especially to rich stews and lamb cutlets. With its combination of spice and a subtle sweetness, this blend also works well with hot curries.

The Shiraz for this special wine come from the cooler Bot River region while the Mourvèdre and Viognier are sourced from the Swartland and Franschhoek Valley respectively.

Grapes were hand-picked and sorted before fermentation. The concentrated flavours in this wine were obtained through a pre-fermentation cold-soak as well as regular punch-downs and pump-overs. Thirty percent of the wine was matured in 225-litre French oak barrels for 24 months and the balance in second-fill French oak for the same period.

Analysis:

Alc: 13.8%

TA 6g/l

pH 3.4

RS: 3.4 g/l

The 2011 Leopard’s Leap Family Collection SMV sells for R70 from the tasting room or online.
