A PHD ON THE CAPE LEOPARD

We are very proud of Quinton Martins, project manager of the Cape Leopard Trust, who has recently been awarded his doctorate from Bristol University. Leopard’s Leap is a proud sponsor of the CLT.

Quinton’s thesis is on ‘The ecology of the leopard in the Cederberg Mountains’. A key aim of his study was to determine home ranges, activity, movements and diet of the leopards of here. According to Bristol University, ‘the results of these studies will provide the most comprehensive understanding of the conservation status and needs of the leopard in the Cape conducted to date.’ The research is aimed at using these data to better understand these elusive and enigmatic carnivores and to alleviate conflict with farmers and ensure protection of their habitat so as to conserve the species.

We are thrilled that Quinton is able to use his research to bring the plight of the leopard to the public’s attention, and that he is contributing to internationally aclaimed academic research on the topic.
