LEOPARD’S LEAP AND OPEN BOOK ANNOUNCE WINNER OF TAKE A MOMENT COMPETITION

LEOPARD’S LEAP AND OPEN BOOK ANNOUNCE WINNER OF TAKE A MOMENT COMPETITION

Graeme Comrie was announced as the winner in the Leopard’s Leap Wines and Open Book Festival Take a Moment writing competition. The announcement took place at the opening ceremony of the festival, held at The Book Lounge in Cape Town on 3 September.

When a taxi makes you seethe,
Or you find a spreadsheet taxing.
When you can’t find room to breathe,
While the in-crowd’s all relaxing.
Quench your rage, make some time,
Turn the page – book and wine.
All the comfort you need
In some red and a read.

These words by Graeme Comrie brilliantly resonate the sentiment of many of us trying to take a moment in our hurried lives. Combining words and wine with clever play and rhyme, Comrie’s Moment charmed the judges and made his contribution stand out from the entries.

Entrants were requested to describe how they take a moment in 50 words or less, incorporating at least three words from the list: Relax, Imagination, Breathe, Stretch, Yourself, Page, Comfort, Luxury, Time. The judges – Leopard’s Leap CEO Hein Koegelenberg, trending author, Qartnita Loxton and celebrated author and literary critic, Karina Szczurek – had their work cut out for them with creative and alternative entries.

Comrie wins a cash prize of R5000, passes to the Open Book Festival and wine for a year! His Take a Moment will be the back-label copy of the 2018 Leopard’s Leap Merlot of which he will receive 12 cases.

Judges’ comments:

“You can fall in love with good writing, as with good wine, at first taste; this is the quality the winning entries of this year’s Leopard’s Leap “Take a Moment Competition” offered the palate” – Karina Szczurek.

“I am delighted that we can celebrate our passion for literature through our partnership with the Open Book Festival.  The annual competition has become something to look forward to – it adds a fun element to the serious topic of literature and education. We can all relate to feeling overwhelmed and I was impressed with the creative ways in which our entrants used words and wine to Take a Moment. Thank you to everyone who entered the competition and congratulations to our winner Graeme Comrie – some red and a read sound like a wonderful idea!” – Hein Koegelenberg.
